General-Purpose AI (GPAI)
An AI model that can perform a wide range of tasks and be integrated into many different systems, regulated under specific provisions of the EU AI Act.

General-purpose AI models, including large foundation and generative models, are not built for a single task but can be adapted to many. The EU AI Act sets dedicated obligations for their providers, such as technical documentation, transparency, and copyright compliance, with stricter rules for models posing systemic risk.
Organisations that build on GPAI inherit some of these considerations and must understand how the model behaves within their own use case.
