Planning BCMS exercises: from tabletop to a reliable proof of capability
Exercises must be allowed to disprove assumptions. For that they need clear objectives, a credible scenario and a clean evaluation.

The exercise type follows the learning objective
A tabletop trains decisions and interfaces. A functional test checks a single capability. A full exercise combines several roles and resources. Complexity alone does not make an exercise more valuable.
Observations become improvements
The evaluation covers criteria defined in advance, such as alerting time, decision quality or reaching a recovery target. Findings need a cause, an action, an owner and a deadline.
- Define the exercise objective and non-objectives
- Prepare the scenario, injects and safety rules
- Brief observers independently
- Track actions through to the effectiveness check
